Validity/expiration of placards/permits

Permanent placards expire 4 years from their date of issuance. Temporary placards are valid for a maximum period of 12 months.

Renewing your permit/placard

No reminder notice will be mailed to the placard holder prior to a placard’s expiration date.

Holders of permanent placards must renew their placards before the expiration date (4 years from the date of issuance). No further medical information will need to be furnished, but Form MVD-10383 must again be completed and submitted to any field office or mailed to the address above. Put another way, Section D of the form will not need to be refilled, only Sections A and E.

Holders of temporary placards may renew their placards by following the same process required for the original issuance of the placard.

Lost placard/replacement

Those wishing to replace a damaged placard may simply bring it to a field office, where it will be reissued at no cost.

Those wishing to replace a lost or stolen placard may call the Motor Vehicle Division at (888) 683-4636, where a customer service representative can offer assistance. (Be prepared to provide a driver’s license or identification number.)

Sections A and E of Form MVD-10383 also allow placard holders to request replacement placards. The form can be brought in to any field office or mailed to the address above.

Where to hang the placard/permit

When the vehicle is parked, the placard must be hung from the rear view mirror with the identification number and expiration date visible from the front of the vehicle. If there is no rear view mirror, the placard should be placed on the dashboard with the identification number and expiration date visible.

The placard is to be displayed only when the vehicle is parked, not when it is in operation. A citation could be issued for obstruction of the driver’s view if the placard is not removed when the vehicle is in operation.
